Journal 10: Hello? Are Your Students Communicating Appropriately?

Clark, Thomas. (2009). Hello? are your students communicating appropriately? .37(3), Retrieved from http://www.iste.org/AM/Template.cfm

In Thomas Clark’s article “Hello? Are Your Students Communicating Appropriately?” he how students connect with their peers through cell phones and email but many express their ideas and feelings spontaneously. Clark believes that students need to understand the difference between professional communication and spontaneous communication. There are some guidelines that he has developed to assure that students are communicating in a professional demeanor:

Identify yourself. In e-mail, include your name and class title in the subject line and in the e-mail’s first sentence. In voicemail, speak slowly, distinctly, and politely so your teacher can easily understand your name, the class title and class time, and, when appropriate, your phone number.

Plan your messages. Jot down what you want the teacher to do in response to your message, why your request is appropriate, details that relate to your request, and reasonable timing for the response. Take this step for both e-mail and voicemail messages.

Be concise. Keep e-mails and voicemails short and to the point.

Show respect. Use phrases such as "Please," "Thank you for taking the time to help me," and "I value your insight." Also, avoid language that indicates disrespect of the teacher or school or that demands an im-mediate response.

Clark also gives guidelines about using emails and even gives an example of a professional respectful email. I think this is a very important lesson for students. As we become more technological savvy we need to understand the difference of addressing someone professionally or as a friend. I definitely think there is a way that people can come across through emails or other devices and as long as students become aware of this they can prevent it when using technology in a professional setting.

How can students benefit from this lesson and when will they need to use these skills?

Students can benefit from lessons on how to professionally leave messages and write emails when communicating with their teachers and other educational advisors. I think many students will really benefit from these skills when reaching higher levels of education such as high school or even college.

Why is proper etiquette for these devises important?

I think this is extremely important because when students are writing an email they need to make sure they write it in a professional respectful tone. I think that through emails your true intention can become blurred when your wording is not what your true voice is saying. This is why I think it is so important for teachers to go over this etiquette in their classroom.

Journal 9: S'Cool Tools

Brown Yoder , M. (2009, November). S'cool tools: 5 great tools to perk up your classroom and engage your students. 37(3), Retrieved from http://www.iste.org

In the article “S'Cool Tools: 5 Great Tools to Perk Up Your Classroom and Engage Your Students” by Maureen Brown Yoder she discusses some of the latest technology that can be used in the classroom. Her choices are made for all different grades and classrooms. Before she chooses what would be best used in the classroom she makes sure she can answer “YES” to three questions about what tools to use in the classroom:
1. Does this tool have the potential to enhance teaching in some powerful way?
2. Is this tool easy to learn and well supported?
3. Is this an innovative new tool or a substantial improvement on an earlier version?
After researching tools and answering yes to her questions she found five beneficial tools to use in the classroom. The first tool is Lego Education's WeDo Robotics Construction Set. She believes all grade levels can use this tool from kindergarten to high school. The tool is designed for ages 7–11, WeDo includes more than 160 Lego elements, a motor, a tilt sensor, a motion sensor, icon-based software, activities with instructions for 12 models, and teacher notes with curriculum objectives, discussion questions, and suggestions for activity extensions. The next tool she introduces is Smart Table is a multitouch, multiuser, interactive learning center with customizable applications. The smart table allows up to eight students to work on it at a time. The third tool is the Aver Pen This pen is like an interactive whiteboard, but without the whiteboard, the installation, calibration, and alignments required. The image can be projected on anything in a room, and pens can write on almost any surface. The Aver Plus software includes interactive tools, image capture, video recording capabilities, and a variety of activities. The fourth is New Multiuser Virtual Environments (MUVEs) and the fifth is Google Apps Education Community: Google is reaching out to educators to provide tools for Internet searching, collaboration, and classroom activities at its new site designed specifically for teachers. These tools are a great way to instruct lesson plans in the classroom. Students can interact with one another and really have fun with the learning process.

Why is it important to find new tools to use in the classroom?

I think that using new technological tools in the classroom is very important in keeping an interactive classroom that is updated with society. I think by using these tools students will be able to learn but also have fun in the process. It is amazing to me to see how far our technology has come. I think with these tools all students can learn and will be engaged.

What tool did you find most interesting and how could this benefit your students?

I think all of the tools presented were amazing and could benefit my future classroom. However, I would have to say my favorite was WeDo. As a future educator I think this would benefit my classroom in many ways. I would like to be a kindergarten teacher and I think this could benefit my students by engaging them in fun interactive activities that will also prepare them with tools for their future education.

Journal 8: Have You Tweeted Today?

Have You Tweeted Today?
Fingal, Diana. "Have You Tweeted Today?." L&L 37. (2009): n. pag. Web. 17 Nov 2009.\

In the article “Have You Tweeted Today” by Diana Fingal she responds to John Ridley’s comments about Twitter which he believes it is somewhat an invasion of privacy and does not really understand the benefits of using the network. Fingal discusses that when people do not understand networks such as Twitter than they do not see the benefits it can bring to the classroom. Diane Fingal believes that Twitter is a great way for teacher to collaborate and share/present lessons. Another benefit Fingal discusses is how educators can share lesson plans with teachers they know or even ones they don’t. And as we all know teachers love to learn from others. However, John Ridley believes that sites such as Twitter are an invasion of privacy. As Fingal states “We need to be-come more tech savvy and in the know about media that our students are utilizing (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube) to better reach and connect with them” as educators if we begin to understand the benefits of these sites we will be able to take advantage of these resources. I enjoyed reading this article because I like many others do not understand all the hype on social networks. And before reading this article and participating in the class I did not see the benefits it could have in the classroom.

What do you believe are some of the major benefits in using sites such as twitter in the classroom?
I believe using sites such as twitter benefit everyone in the classroom as Fingal states teachers can connect with each other and collaborate. I also think a benefit of using these sites is connecting with the students. I think if we use resources that they use in everyday life they will be more inclined to learning new material and enjoy it.

Why might some teachers not want to use the cyber networks in the classroom?
I believe the main reason would be because they do not know or see the benefits. I think if the teachers were more informed and understood they would immediately see the benefits of using these sites in the classroom.
