Journal #1: Online Learning

Coyle, S., Jones, T., & Pickle, S.K. (2009). From Alaska to Arkansas, Districts are Experimenting with Online Learning to Solve Access Problems. Learning & Leading with Technology, 37(2), Retrieved September 9, 2009 from http://www.iste.org/Content/NavigationMenu/Publications/LL/LLIssues/Volume3720092010/SeptemberOctoberNo2/e_Learning_Programs_Come_in_All_Shapes_a.htm

In this article we learn about three different ways online learning has benefited schools across the country. The Yukon-Koyukuk School District (YKSD) in Alaska uses online learning to allow students to participate in a virtual classroom. Getting to school for students was near impossible seeing is that they had to commute on a small plane. This was not the only issue, teachers were also having to teach five different levels, each with a different lesson plan. Online learning has changed the way students attend class. Now their classes are conducted online through the virtual classroom. Academic achievement has increased and test scores continue to improve thanks to the new technology that has been incorporated. Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS) has made online learning accessible for the students to finish school at their own personal pace. On-site mentors are provided to ensure that each student is ensured all the support they need to increase their educational experience. Students are able to have a flexible schedule and are guaranteed a positive learning environment. Online learning in Arkansas has provided highly qualified instructors that would not have always been available and to also ensure flexibility for each of the students. Students are able to improve their knowledge using technology, and this has been proven with a 95% passing rate. Online learning has provided these areas with technology and education that once could not be obtained. I think this is a great way for students to be provided the best learning experience and through the technology students academic levels are rising.

What are some ways students are able to reach such academic success through online learning?

Online learning provides students to reach their full potential but allowing them to have more flexible school schedules. Also, teachers are able to make lesson plans that are accurate to the grade level in which the student is at. This is beneficial to small school districts such as The Yukon-Koyukuk School District (YKSD) because teachers were having to teach up to five different levels with five different lesson plans. And as a result to the flexible schedules students are also being provided with higher qualified teachers through online learning.

Do you believe that it is necessary that students are provided with a face to face mentor when needed?

Yes, I believe it is necessary for students to be provided with a face to face mentor. I think this is helpful because students will be provided with help for each of their individual needs. I think that using online learning is a great way for students to reach their full potential but if they are also provided with one on one time their questions can be answered. I also think this will benefit the students who may not be as comfortable with using a computer and they will be able to improve on their skills with the help of a mentor.
